But the concept — real world vs. virtual world, the confusions of each and the preferred comfort levels of each — is now very familiar territory.
If, on the other hand, you’re OK with a fright – a buildup of tension and things that go bump in the night, in an abandoned ski resort – then it is fabulous. Someone has developed a hood that prevents it happening. Even the casting, at times, is almost a distraction -- as if by the time you've taken in the premise and gotten used to the actor in the role, the tale in question is almost finished. All rights reserved. Certainly, the program feels like a far cry from the writer's famous work invoked by the title, "Do Androids Dream of Electronic Sheep?," which became "Blade Runner," although there are echoes of that and other familiar sci-fi themes throughout the run. That's not a bad deal.
For starters, it's the visionary Dick himself, who was well out in front, starting in the 1950s, with his books and short stories that were sci-fi but laced with a clearly defined idea of how the human element played into the glitzier notions of advanced technology and other utopian, futuristic concepts. The Hood Maker is terrific, thoughtful, thought-provoking and compelling. Like Black Mirror, the production design in Electric Dreams smartly evokes various visions of the future while still looking enough like the present to be recognizable. Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams, with stories based on the works of the writer by the same name, is an interesting but sadly flawed anthology that never reaches the lofty heights it so easily could have achieved. Much like other anthologies, there’s some good episodes and some bad but the sporadic quality of each episode varies from poor all the way to great making this a difficult one to review.
Considering the variety of stories shown here, each plot follows a pretty similar arc. Unfortunately, the execution is clumsy in a lot of the episodes and even the star power can’t hide the inconsistency with the plots. The downside of that restraint is that some stories hold back so much that they turn into sleep aids.
Today, it looks like Charlottesville; the people – normals – are marching, protesting against teeps; mutant telepaths who can access their thoughts (think CSA meets Google meets Minority Report’s precogs). Cast: Bryan Cranston, Greg Kinnear, Steve Buscemi, Vera Farmiga, Maura Tierney, Richard Madden, Mireille Enos, Timothy Spall, Liam Cunningham, Holliday Grainger, Mel Rodriguez, Benedict Wong, Essie Davis, Geraldine Chaplin. That person probably won't like much of Amazon's new anthology series, Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams, based on a series of his short stories (with each of the 10 hourlong installments featuring different writers and directors, given latitude to stray from the original content as they see fit). Absolutely not. "The Father Thing," by contrast, has the small-boned atmosphere of a "Twilight Zone," with a young boy suspecting that his dad (Greg Kinnear) has been replaced by alien invaders. That episode, elegantly directed by Francesca Gregorini, and two other really absorbing ones – “The Commuter,” starring Timothy Spall as a train station employee who discovers a super-secret stop that allows him to escape from a challenging home life, and “K.A.O.,” written and directed by Rees — are the best of the season and the ones to watch first.
Extremely uneven, this 10-episode Amazon series collectively proves pretty forgettable -- yielding a concept that, in this age of binge viewing, literally isn't worth losing sleep over. But the landscape was much more dominated by highly serialized dramas like The Sopranos, 24, Lost, and Breaking Bad, which more or less required viewers to watch every episode and season in chronological order. And working with him, not just watching the people, but reading them and their darkest secrets, too, is Honor the teep. The episodes are well acted and the plot lines intriguing but the way they’ve been adapted ultimately causes this anthology show to stumble. Like trousers with an elasticated waist, sci-fi is naturally forgiving of flab. The star power helps too but the varying quality of each episode holds the show back from being a truly great showcase of Philip K. Dick’s stories.
But don’t look for any consolation from him. In "Electric Dreams", they've made one slight change in this age-old scenario, to bring it up to date. Die deutschsprachige Erstveröffentlichung fand am 12. Father Thing. It's helpful that we live in a binge-TV world and that Amazon is a purveyor of that, since skipping over whatever perceived "weaker" episodes you find is not a ruiner, given the anthology concept. © 2020 TheReviewGeek.
With an average first few episodes, I can’t help but feel the show would have benefited from changing the episode run to keep interest high with a big episode to start the show.
Electric Dreams ' dreamy production values and optimistic tone help make up for a lack of originality and tonal cohesion -- and save the show from feeling like just another Black Mirror clone. I’ve seen a couple more episodes, though, and without going into detail or giving anything away, they’re simply less engaging. It’s a fairy-tale about loss that becomes a boisterous techno-sci-fi extravaganza. Here she looks more like someone you’d bump into in the stranger fields on the fringes of Glastonbury. Mon 18 Sep 2017 06.00 BST Schlock horror, or a smörgåsbord of cheese and chill. Making all of us jealous in his new “Golden” music video, that is. | Cookie Settings. That’s what’s right with Electric Dreams, the first episode, at least. Roger Ebert was the film critic of the Chicago Sun-Times from 1967 until his death in 2013.
The script writing for the characters varies too, with a distinct lack of characterisation given to some of the main characters. The Hood Maker
Getting hung up on dismissing the ones you're less into makes you, well, that person.
Despite some Electric Dreams episodes feeling overly familiar or their execution being less interesting than some similar sci-fi takes elsewhere, none of them is a turnoff, and there are some real gems to be found here. Somebody tells him he ought to get a computer to help him keep track of things. Dick's daughter, Isa Dick Hackett, is an executive producer on the show, and has clearly been savvy about mining her late father's library. He must tell the girl the truth or he will not truly deserve her. Available for everyone, funded by readers. With a lot of dark, poorly lit locales and a lack of establishing or aerial shots for the areas, Electric Dreams relies heavily on its plot and performances from its actors with the camera remaining firmly on the ground.
Privacy | When von Dohlen unpacks his computer and starts to assemble it, he reminds us a little of somebody like Harold Lloyd, determined to lick this thing. As an example of the mood assortment available in the anthology, "The Commuter" attempts a story that a full-blown movie could be built around: A train-station agent discovers that passengers are going to a destination that doesn't exist on the map. And it’s more human, more moving, and wittier.
That scene, and a lot of other virtuoso moments in the movie, are photographed by Alex Thomson with a kind of fluid, poetic visual abandon that makes the movie a lot of fun to watch. A metropolitan dystopia, post-computer, post-internet. Actually, it’s not really like that, unless you are Channel 4 I imagine.

Are there any problems? There’s some really good performances here and the inclusion of some of these Hollywood stars helps the rest of the cast step up their game.. Yes and no. Briefly to the Borgen slot then, and The Black Lake (BBC4, Saturday) from Sweden. Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams is streaming at an extreme moment of unrest and uncertainty, in the U.S. and elsewhere, and perhaps that’s part of the appeal in it, as well as Black Mirror. 72% Better, in short. But if you could just have one, then you’d obviously pick the old one. He may have died 35 years ago, but Philip K. Dick’s influence is everywhere in 2018.
He's likable, incompetent, and slightly dense.
But they generate suspense, curiosity, anxiety, and a sense of grief with greater precision than the rest of Electric Dreams. All rights reserved. And, yes, there are a lot of cooks in this kitchen — multiple executive producers — but Isa Dick Hackett, who shepherds her father's library of works, and Moore oversaw the vision here. There are numerous troubles with mounting a good science fiction series; there are plenty of excellent ones already out there, from Black Mirror to Humans to Westworld, and many movies and TV series spanning decades, so retreading ideas and falling short in the process is a very real risk — but perhaps the most insurmountable issue is the sci-fi connoisseur. One wonders if having to revamp Dick’s existing, inventive work is a more difficult task than simply starting from scratch, as Brooker and his collaborators do on Black Mirror.
